My name is Rick Tolhurst and I am a 39 year old portrait photographer from Kamloops, British Columbia.

My interest in photography started in 1995 when I bought my first SLR from a pawn shop as an impulse buy. I mean, the camera looked pretty cool, and it came with a couple of lenses, but I never realized how much my appetite for photography would grow. I started getting involved as a volunteer photographer with the local newspaper to help cover local festivals and events. I also joined a photography club and began reading every magazine and how-to book I could get my hands on. With the knowledge I had gained, I made attempts to duplicate photographs created by other photographers that I admired. I wanted to learn as much as I could then, as I still do even now, 15 years later.

At the time I bought my camera, I was working in the forest industry, it was also a time of uncertainty and concern. I began photographing the industry as I knew it; using my photographs to show how sustainable logging practises could benefit the environment, from clearcutting to selective logging. It wasnt long before a few special interest groups and local businesses from other resource based industrial sectors became interested in my work. And this is how I began my journey as a professional photographer.
